Elmar Doppelfeld studied history, law, scientific politics and human medicine at the universities of Tübingen, Münster and Cologne. He received his doctorate in "Dr.med." and trained as a physician for radiology and a physician for nuclear medicine at the Fachkliniken of the universities of Zurich and Cologne as well as the RWTH Aachen. He has worked on various topics including radiotherapy and nuclear medicine, with a focus on nuclear medical functional analysis of urinary disorders.
Doppelfeld was the Managing Director of the Federal Chamber of Physicians and Scientific Director of the "Deutsches Ärzteblatt". Until 2012 he was a member of the Executive Board of the "Working Group of Medical Ethics Committees in the Federal Republic of Germany" acting as chairman from 1996 onwards. He is a member of the German delegation to the steering committee "Bioethik" of the Council of Europe (CDBI / DH-Bio) and was President of the Steering Committee "Bioethics" of the Council of Europe until 2007. He is currently the President of the "European Network of Research Ethics Committee EUREC” and a member of the Advisory Board of the EU project SATORI.
