Michael J. Young, MD, MPhil

Dr. Michael Young is senior resident physician in neurology at Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham & Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School. He has a deep background and interest in bioethics, having received an M.Phil in philosophy with specific focus on ethical and philosophical issues in medicine as a Gates Cambridge Scholar before completing his M.D. with Honors from Harvard Medical School. At Harvard, he has been awarded the Rose Seegal Award for Research, the Henry K. Beecher Prize in Medical Ethics, the Neil Samuel Ghiso Fellowship for Compassionate Medical Care, and a Student Fellowship in the Petrie-Flom Center for Health Law Policy, Biotechnology and Bioethics.
In addition to his ongoing clinical work in neurology, he currently serves on the ethics committees at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, where he has continued to deepen his involvement in bioethics practice and research. He has advocated for the close involvement of bioethicists in the biopharmaceutical sector to champion the development of ethically responsible strategies, and for expanding bioethics knowledge to improve healthcare for vulnerable populations. He is developing a curriculum in neuro-ethics for the Harvard Neurology Residency program, and leads the Healthcare for the Homeless Neurology Clinic. His research and expertise in bioethics and philosophy of medicine has garnered national and international interest; he has been sought after to speak in numerous academic settings and most recently delivered grand rounds at Maine Medical Center. The American Academy of Neurology recently appointed him as a member of the distinguished Palatucci Advocacy Leadership Forum.
