Steven Martin, MPhil

"Steven has worked for over 10 years as a researcher in epidemiology and public health. He currently works as a Senior Researcher for the Center for Disaster & Humanitarian Ethics at the GE2P2 Global Foundation, and is also a member of The Centre for the Study of Global Human Movement at the University of Cambridge.
Since 2003, Steven has been involved in a number of refugee charities and since 2012 has volunteered in a number of refugee camps in the West Bank, France, Belgium and Greece. Steven's most recent experience was working as the systematic reviewer on the Post-Research Ethics Analysis (PREA) project. PREA is a research project investigating ethical issues in health research in humanitarian crises. It aims to identify good ethical practice from lessons learned in the field and develop a tool that assists reflection on ethical issues in humanitarian research. From this work, Steven is currently authoring a book on the ethical issues encountered during the conduct of health research in humanitarian crises.
Steven gained his MPhil from the University of Warwick, his MA from the University of Durham and his Ba (Hons.) from the University of Northumbria at Newcastle. His research interests include: The social application of complexity theory; research methodology (design, interpretation, analysis, synthesis and evaluation of evidence); translational research aimed at improving health outcomes for vulnerable communities in society; case-based research; commercial determinants of health; clinical and health systems improvement; health and illness; social networks; social class; the philosophy of science; and agent-based simulation.
